Ahhhhhhhhh!!!! It’s the end of July. Next comes August. In August there’s school. How did back to school sneak up so fast? It is already time to start gathering school supplies, picking out school clothes, and preparing for the first day. It’s also time to ensure you are taking control of your child’s education. That’s right! You, the parent! It’s up to you to make sure your child’s education supports and fosters growth!
You must be upfront with all the active participants in your child’s educational journey! You must tell them what you expect, what your needs are (this includes your child’s needs), and ask how can you support the overall goal of your child flourishing and succeeding. And by participants, I’m referring to your child, the teachers, the administrators, etc. As parents, we must revise the cliche, “It takes a village to raise a child”. It should say, “It takes a village to raise and to educate a child.”
Sometimes it is hard asserting yourself as the captain of the ship, especially when there is a huge institution already in place, like school. It is difficult, at times, coming off as the pushy parent or the demanding parent or the needy parent. For our children, and their futures, we cannot allow those things to deter us from or stop us on our path. Some may call us pushy, some may call us demanding, some may call us needy. No matter what they call us, they have to include, “Issa Parent”!
