Before we break down the reading readiness identifiers, let’s define reading. Reading is a multifaceted process that includes many different elements like letters, sounds, sentences, and paragraphs, to name a few. Being able to successfully recognize and master multiple elements simultaneously is reading. Reading starts when a child begins to recognize that the letters and sounds form words, words make sentences, and when it's all put together it has an actual meaning. Remember, it starts with the elements. If your child is coloring letters, singing the alphabet song, reciting sight words or reading chapter books, all of these things are a part of the reading process.
